Our Learn to Skate (LTS) program is designed for children ages 4-6 years. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 60 participants. The program is primarily open to residents of the Trails West area, but if space allows, we will also accept registrations from those outside the TWHA area. To see if your community is within the Trails West area, please refer to our interactive map.
For insurance purposes, all participants must have Alberta Health Care coverage.
Coach Dave has been leading our Learn to Skate program for the past 10 years. He focuses on creating a fun, family-oriented environment where children can develop their skating skills, all while enjoying a hockey setting. This program is suitable for both beginners with little to no experience and children who are already comfortable on skates.
Each child must wear full hockey equipment (including a helmet and stick) for every ice time. Additionally, a parent or another family member must accompany the child on the ice, and they too must wear a helmet and skates.
We encourage active involvement from parents and extended family members, as it reinforces the idea that hockey is truly a family experience. Parents don’t need to be experienced skaters — many learn alongside their children! While many activities are designed for both parents and children, there will be some activities that are for kids only, particularly by January, once the children are skating comfortably on their own.
SCHEDULE | The program runs from October to March at Flame Community Arenas. Ice times are typically scheduled for mid-morning, alternating between one ice time one weekend and two the next. |
VOLUNTEERING | Learn to Skate is fully volunteer-driven. The LTS Coordinator will manage the LTS TeamSnap account, coordinate with the Trails West Ice Scheduler, and oversee off-ice activities. These activities may include a picture day, a Christmas party, a year-end trophy windup, and possibly occasional playground get-togethers. |
WAITLIST | If you live outside our boundaries and are interested in the program, you can register by selecting the LTS Waitlist option (no fee required). If space is available, the TWHA Administrator will contact those on the waitlist in the order of registration. Payment for the full registration fee will be required when a spot is offered. |
REFUND POLICY | Full refund of Regular Registration Fee less $50, less portion of season missed. To request a refund, please complete the TWHA Refund Form Learn to Skate and send it to the TWHA Administrator. |
